My Kitchen Clean-Up Tips

Supper time every single day, results in a kitchen mess that is just relentless. Meal prep and creation is a messy job, and the bigger the family, the bigger the mess. I have been a mom for 17 years now. It has taken a lot of trial and error to get to where I am with kitchen clean up skills, while keeping peace in mind in tact. Here’s my step by step cleanup routine that helps keep the brain work at bay, and the auto pilot hands moving!

GOLDEN RULE: START AT THE TOP, AND MAKE YOUR WAY DOWN

Step 1: PUT AWAY WHATEVER CAN BE PUT AWAY
  • Anything that belongs in the fridge, put it away.  Condiments, left-overs from dinner etc. (don’t place hot food in  closed containers, rather, leave lid off, cool on counter, and once the food is room temperature, you can pop on the lid and place in the fridge.
  • If there’s dishes in the clean dish rack, put them away (because there’s more coming!)
Step 2: GATHER THE DIRTY DISHES AND PLACE AT THE SINK, OR IN THE DISHWASHER
  • After putting everything (clean) away where it belongs, you are now going to deal with the dirty stuff!
  • Go around the house and collect up all the dirty dishes. Be efficient and get them ALL.  Teenager/kids rooms, living room, collect them all up and place them next to the sink.
  • Of course, if you have a dishwasher and would prefer to utilize that, please do! LOAD IT UP! We also have a dishwasher, however with a family of 5, it makes the hydro bill a little heavy, using it everyday, so I try to do dishes manually the most I can.
  • Rinse off  food and debris from the dishes, before placing in clean dishwater, or in the dishwasher!
Step 3: COUNTERS SHOULD BE CLEAR, TIME TO WIPE THEM
  • Fill the sink with fresh soapy water, using your dish soap of choice. I tend to be old fashion and continue to use the Green Palmolive! I LOVE the SMELL!
  • If you are interested, you can add a splash of bleach for disinfection purposes, or if you’re strange like me, for that clean bleachy smell!
  • Take a FRESH, unused dish cloth ( I change my dish cloths and towels everyday, sometimes more depending  on what my family members end up using them for…like the floor, ugh!) and wipe down the counter surfaces, dining table, appliances, cupboard handles, and cupboard faces.
  • Wiping and disinfecting your surfaces prior to dishes is something I do, because time and time again it seems that while drying the dishes, they end up sitting on the counter
Step 4: COUNTERS ARE CLEAN, TIME TO DO THE DISHES!
  • Unless you have already placed most of your dishes in the dishwasher,  its time to get them cleaned up and placed in the empty dish rack! Larger items such as Pots and Pans, Baking Sheets etc. should all be done manually, rather than unnecessarily filling valuable space in the dishwasher .
  • Don’t be Lazy, for crying out loud, you can achieve far more, in the long run, by putting in the little bit of extra effort.
Step 5: SWEEP & MOP THE FLOOR
  • The last step is cleaning the floors! I personally use the Vileda One Sweep Broom and the   Vileda Pro Mist Mop. For the mop especially, it’s great not having to go out and constantly purchase refills, like you have to with the Swiffer. When you require a refill with Vileda, all you have to do is detach the bottle and fill it with your cleaning solution of choice .
  • I personally place all my dining room chairs on top of the table, so that It’s easy to get under there with the broom and the mop!
